Sailing Open Day at Algies Bay – Saturday 11 July 2015, 11.30am – 4pm

The Centreboard Division of the Sandspit Yacht Club wish to advise the residents and ratepayers of Algies Bay that they are holding an Open Day for all families to come and do some Winter sailing, on what we hope will be a nice fine day at Aglies Bay this Saturday 11 July. We do apologise for the late notice in getting this info to you.

It’s always nice to have a few extra volunteers too so maybe one or two residents may be able to help out on that front.

All the details are below, or contact Glenys Milne on Ph: 4222 479 02 mobile 0274 805051

The SYC Centreboard Division is holding an Open Day at Algies Bay on Saturday 11 July from 11.30m-4.00pm.

Focus is on FAMILY FUN so we invite you to dust off/scrub down your old faithful and take it for a sail. There are seven club-owned plastic Opti’s available for those who don’t have a dinghy, available for half-hour stints for those who would like to take their children out for a sail (no charge). Whilst there will be patrol boats, each person is responsible for their own safety and that of their family. Life-jackets essential.

A sausage sizzle will be running all day, $2.50 + drinks $2 and a coffee van will be on site.

A Bring & Buy will take place on the lawn outside the clubrooms for those wanting to sell or purchase bits and pieces to do with sailing/boating. Dinghies, oars, life-jackets, anchors, buoys, wet weather gear/clothing (particularly in childrens’ sizing) – anything at all that you think someone can make use of, then tidy it up, put a price and contact phone number on it. If it needs some explanation, be sure to add that too (ie what boat the sail fits, age of outboard etc). Unsold pieces should be collected at the end of the day or will be on-sold as a fundraiser for the division.

Volunteers are needed to help run the Open Day. If you have an hour to spare and interesting in helping on the patrol boats (or if you have an outboard-driven dinghy and are happy to be an extra set of eyes on the water), then this would be helpful. Assistance is needed on the beach overseeing children, from helping to put on life-jackets, rig up boats, help with launch and retrieval, help on the bbq (roster), keep an eye on Bring & Buy, or simply to help monitor the beach. Extra hands and eyes, and words of encouragement for the youngsters; that’s what we need. Please contact Glenys Milne on 4222 479, 0274 805051 or email glenysmilne@yahoo.co.nz.

If you can’t help on 11th July, but keen to help out on an occasional basis when such sailing activities are on, then again, let us know and we can pop your name onto our list of such contacts for future use.

Whilst centreboard sailing continues throughout the whole year, our club is closed until early October. The season starts in earnest when the kids return to school for Term 4 on 12 October. To receive regular updates about what the club is up to, please email: sandspitlearntosail@gmail.com or contact Mischelle Mills on 0221 171 2550.

The Centreboard Division AGM will be held on Wednesday 29 July at 7pm at the Aglies Bay Clubrooms.

We are doing a beach clean-up prior to 2014 Christmas and are inviting your participation.
As it will be during school holidays, we hope you can bring down your children and grandchildren as they enjoy helping in picking up the stones.
This operation will be co-ordinated by the usual organiser David Cammell, starting outside the Yacht club as our gathering point at 8am to tie in with the low tide that day.
It is proposed that we break into 2 teams with one team then heading down to the southern end to commence from outside Bethshan Motels working back up the beach and for the Northern team to both eventually work towards the main boat ramp as perhaps the finish spot.
Brian Algie and Malcolm Wakefield will provide a tractor with bucket for each team and Malcolms Truck to work between the two.
On the completion of work on the new Sea Wall Project, it is understood that the affected beach area will be groomed along with the addition of new sand to be brought in .

Date – Saturday the 13th December 2014.
Time – From 8am.
Place – Algies Bay beach by the yacht club.
Bring a bucket to collect the stones in.
Looking forward to getting as many people as possible to help.

The Sandspit Yacht Club at Algies Bay is again hosting the 2014 Inter-dominion Schools Team Sailing Championships, plus the annual SYC Spring Team Sailing Regatta.

This will bring the top Secondary School sailing teams from New Zealand to compete against those from Australia, plus teams from Napier north are expected to compete in the Spring Regatta.

Expected are up to 24 teams, with around 200 sailors and support personnel.

When – Monday 29th September to Wednesday 1st October 2014.

Teams and inflatables will be arriving on Saturday the 27th September and they will be setting up a truck with a lockable container on it to store equipment.

They will be using the boat ramp predominantly in the morning and afternoon, with activity starting around 8am and finish around 6pm.

The lower road on the seaward side of the yacht club will be closed during the entire time for boat storage at night.

They will try to limit using parking space for the trailers by stacking them close to the clubhouse.

It is an enjoyable spectacle to watch so hope you enjoy it.
